When the United States government purchased Blair House in 1942, the acquisition included both the home and a substantial portion of its contents. The furnishings, fine art and decorative arts that today grace the rooms of Blair House are a combination of items original to the home and others acquired through purchases and donations.

The collections represent American Federal, English Regency and Victorian tastes. Highlights include paintings by American masters Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Thomas Moran and John Singer Sargent; 18th and 19th century English and Chinese export porcelain; American glass and silver; and over 50 early lighting fixtures.
